Keokuk Campus Drama Club Zombies Lurch for the Arts
Today it seems that zombies are everywhere. Once the sole fodder of mildly-scary B movies, Michael Jackson videos, and bad Halloween costumes, zombies have gone big time. They’re practically mainstream – even the National Center for Disease Control provides instructions on how to survive a zombie apocalypse.

With the undead lurching throughout pop culture, it’s no surprise that they recently stumbled their way into Keokuk. On October 19, the Keokuk Campus Drama Club hosted its Second Annual Zombie Walk. More than 100 people attended, and 50 zombies lurched up Main Street.
“It was a cold and rainy evening for zombies, but the dead rose for the occasion,” jokes Keokuk Campus English and Drama instructor Jodi Cook.
Spectators lined Main Street to see the zombie walkers up close and personal, and carloads of families looked thoroughly entertained while others were completely baffled.
Bedtime for zombies
“It was great to see the lengths the public and SCC community went to transform themselves into the walking dead. Some of the make-up and costumes this year were outstanding,” notes Jodi.
Heather Hutcherson lurched away with the $100 Best Zombie prize.
Thanks to the generosity of area businesses, practically anyone who stayed to the end took home some sort of prize.
Jodi says the group plans to spice up the event next year. “We’re thinking about having the event earlier and maybe incorporating a theme like zombie prom or a haunted walk.”
