Lake Mills Standout is Latest Blackhawk VB Recruit

Darcy Nelson is the seventh new recruit to sign on with the Blackhawks for the 2010 season. Nelson is a 5'8" middle hitter from Lake Mills, Iowa. She played under head coach, Jim Boehmer. Her list of accomplishments include KIMT & KIOW & Globe Gazetter STudent Athlete of the Week, NIC 2nd Team all-conferenc as a junior, Unanimous NIC 1st Team and Player of the Year during her senior season. She also is a standout on the track a state qualifier placing 2nd in the 4x400 her freshman year.

Coach Reid had this to say about Darcy, "This student-athlete is a great pick-up for this late in the recruiting season. She may not be a huge middle in height, but she can jump and she plays smart. That will be the advantage for Darcy. She just loves to play the game and she is going to be a great fit for our program."

SCC Volleyball Inks Outside Hitter from Colorado!

SCC Volleyball came away with another great recruit in Lacie Tarver from Mead, Colorado. Lacie is a 5'9" outside hitter that will graduate from Skyline High School this spring. She played for Coach Will Rozum, advancing to the state tournament in 2007-2008 and were district & regional qualifiers in 2006-2009. Lacie played for coach Elle Cardiel on the Norco Volleyball Club team. She is the daughter of Mike & Lorraine Tarver and plans to major in nursing while at SCC.

Coach Reid praised Lacie's talent, "You can just tell when talking to Lacie that she is excited about this opportunity. She will be a strong contender in the outside hitting position and we hope to see big things out her."

Wisconsin Native Signs With Blackhawks!

Corissa Quednow, a 5'9" right side hitter from Medford Wicsonsin is the ninth player to sign with the Blackhawks this fall. She will join 4 returning players and 4 other new signees for the 2010-2011 season. Quednow is the daughter of Carmen & Thomas Quednow. She played for high school coach, Dave Vaara at Medford Area Senior High, lettering 3 years at the varsity level. Corissa competed for Coach Barb Anderson on her club team, Northern Pride.

Coach Reid is excited about the new addition to the program, "Corissa is a wonderful player and has a personality to match. She comes from a great club program and we always look for that in our recruits. The level of competition in our conference is only going to make Corissa a more well rounded volleyball player. I think she is going to fit in nicely to our roster for this fall."

The Blackhawks finished 28-10 this past season.

SCC Vollyeball Alum Goes Bald for Children's Cancer Research

 
Southeastern Community College 2008 graduate and volleyball alum has done something that most 20 year old college students would never dream of... she shaved her head! Not as a prank, not as a dare, not as a weird college initiation, but for the awareness of childhood cancer and for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Julie also raised over $500 in donations to donate to St. Baldrick's, all proceeds going to children's cancer research.

Julie is currently a junior political science major, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

SCC Volleyball Begins Signing Student Athletes for 2010-2011!

The SCC Volleyball team has started their recruiting season off with a BANG! Signing four area athletes to the roster for 2010. Coach Reid's alma mater, New London High School, added three standouts to the Blackhawk's roster.

Jessica Lerdal, a 1st Team All-State selection averaged 5.2 kills per game last year, will add to the team's outside hitting force. Sasha Noel, averaged 2.3 kills per game and 3.1 digs per game last year for the Tiger's will also work on her hitting and her backrow skills for the Blackhawks. And last, but not least, Taylor Delaney, averaged 8.5 assists per game and 2.9 digs per game, will be back-up setter for the Blackhawks and will also hone in on her backrow playing abilities.

New London was 30-10 last season and advanced to the state tournament for the fifth straight year. The Tigers were a combined 137-28 in the trio's four years, including 33-3 in the SEI Superconference South Division.

Also adding to the Southeast Iowa recruiting class, will be hitter Karla Hester. Hester is 5'11" all-around hitter that will probably fill in the middle or right side position for the Blackhawks. Karla was a 4 year starter for Winfield Mt. Union averaging 2.1 kill and serving at 91.8 percent for the Lady Wolves last season.

Happy Holidays from the SCC VB Team!

The SCC Volleyball Team recently had their annual Christmas dinner and holiday card photo last week. The team first headed to the mall to get their picture taken with Santa Claus (I think he was very excited to be surrounded by 11 lovely ladies)! Carri Peterson was not pictured, she was still snowed in, in Illinois! We missed her for sure!

After that the team headed over to Gator's for a nice dinner and some much needed catching up! Everyone seemed VERY excited for the month break coming up and not so excited about their final exams :) It was great to get everyone together one more time before the spring semester kicks off. We wish you and your family a wonderful and safe holiday season and we THANK YOU for your support in 2009! Can't wait to see what's in store for the team in 2010.

SCC Volleyball in the Community

I am a little late in reporting this on our blog, but I thought that the team's community projects deserved some recognition!

In September the team participated in the Walk for Wishes sponsored by the Iowa Chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation. The team collected donations and then met at Crapo Park to participate in the walk.

 
The team also participated in the national effort to combat breast cancer. Dig Pink! The team sold pink t-shirts and collected donations at the gate during our October 21st game against St. Ambrose JV. The team also wore pink t-shirts and handed out pink ribbons in honor of those affected by this disease. Even the officials wore pink! 

Look for more community service projects this winter and spring from this team!

  

SuCCessful Season Completed

Sorry for the huge gap between entries! In the heart of the season we were busy, busy, busy!! Mostly winning matches, going 28-10 on the 2009 season! Finishing 3rd in the conference!

We lost to conference powerhouse, DMACC in a Regional semi-final. DMACC then defeated Kirkwood then next day to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament at the Wisconsin Dells (they finished 5th at the tourney), congrats to DMACC on their success!

But, let's not forget the SuCCess of the Blackhawk Volleyball team!! 28 wins (the most since 1992 when Coach Ritter's team went 35-5), giving Coach Reid her 100th victory and the post season honors as seen below...

Way to go girls!! The team is proud of you!!

So now that the season is over :( The girls are busy getting ready for final exams and the much anticipated Xmas break!

We will be celebrating at a team on December 10th in our end of the season banquet at Big Muddy's and our annual Xmas card picture (look for this soon)!

We will be having an open gym on Sunday after the men's 1:00 basketball game. Open to our potential recruits! We are looking forward to welcoming these girls into our team hopefully in the near future!

Welcome To Our Blog!

The SCC Volleyball team has created this blog to keep fans, family and friends up to date with what is going on with our team! The blog will be written by coaches and players....So welcome and enjoy!!

So far the season has been an enjoyable one for players and coaches alike. The team has won 13 of it's 17 matches (for those of you not quick at math, that makes us 13-4)! Our only losses have come to ranked teams in the NJCAA.

The team has been working hard since August 2nd at practice, they especially loved the two-a-days with strength and conditioning Coach, Chris Reed! On days when a gym wasn't available it was no big deal, because we have sand courts close by, right girls!?

Besides volleyball, the girls are working hard in the classroom, completing 3 hours of study table per week. They have also given back to the community by volunteering for the local Paint-a-Thon. And most recently volunteering for "Walk for Wishes" on October 4th, where they will walk for the local Make-A-Wish foundation! 

Recently the Blackhawks played in their own tournament and went 3-1, taking a competitive East Central team to 5 games, but coming up short by 2 points! Last night the team traveled to Marshalltown to play at their newly constructed student activity center and took the Tigers out in 3 games! Then it was on the bus for a 3 hour trip home. But, no worries because our bus has a DVD player, which made the ride seem shorter!

Tomorrow we travel to Monmouth to take on their JV squad at a 6:30 match. And then focus on practice, as we have the weekend off. SCC will be hosting the Southeast Iowa Superconference Tournament on Saturday, after practice them team will be line judging and working the scoreboard for the tournament. We want to wish GOOD LUCK to our local high school teams!
